"So far, the domestic rice seed coating agent market is still under slow development, with few varieties available," commented some experts, "With wider application of rice seed coating, this pesticide is expected to bring new profit growth to the industry. Yet, this market is still waiting for further development, especially new varieties like seed coating agents for rice pests."

Although registrations of rice seed coating agents has increased year by year since 2011, its number is still far less than that of seed coating agents for other crops, like corn and wheat. According to the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture, as of 7 June, 2016, there have been altogether 515 seed agents registered in China, of which 217 are for corn, 141 for wheat, 89 for cotton, 57 for rice and 11 for other crops.

Notably, targets of the 57 rice seed coating agents are relatively concentrated, with the lack of coating agents for some significant rice pests & diseases.

- For rice diseases

So far, most rice seed coating agents are used for the control and prevention of diseases during seedling period, like root rots and bakanae disease. Merely one is registered for rice sheath blight and two for rice blast.

- For rice pests

The majority of rice seed coating agents target at thrip, with four for rice plant hopper and one for rice leaf roller.

In addition, the registered rice seed coating agents are also lacking in diverse varieties. Most for coating agents are nicotinyl insecticides.

Apart from the lack of suitable varieties, there are also other factors restraining the development of rice seed coating agents in China, like farmers' planting habits, support from the government and promotion by enterprises.

Yang Fuchu, head of the Hunan Crop Protection Station (HCPS), pointed out: "Hunan Province is one of the important rice planting area in China. In recent years, rice pests & diseases have stricken the province heavily and frequently in large area, which has been an obstacle and threat to grain production."

In 2015, the occurrence of crop pests & diseases was severe in Hunan Province, with a cumulative stricken area of 40.47 million ha (607 million mu), of which 20.47 million ha (307 million mu) were of rice pests & diseases. However, the rice planting area with application of seed coating treatment was only 1.27 million ha (19 million mu), 30% of the provincial total.

In response to this, "The HCPS will vigorously promote the seed coating treatment technology to reduce the provincial loss caused by pests & diseases to5%," said Yang Fuchu.

With promotion by crop protection departments in Hunan and other major rice planting provinces, more outstanding rice seed coating agents is believed to be developed in domestic market.

The application of seed coating agents will play a significant role in accelerating transformation in agricultural industry and achieving the goal of zero growth in pesticide consumption. With the changes in farmers' planting habits, maturity of rice seed coating technology, market launch of more new seed coating agents, support from the government and promotion by enterprises, China's rice seed coating agent market will be promising in the future.
